Prompt: The personal history of an author can have a significant influence on the way meaning is constructed in his/her writing. Comment on specific instances of influence in Things Fall Apart.
Chinua Achebe, one of the first Nigerian English writers, writes his novel Things Fall Apart in 1958 as a way to connect both sides of his dual identity; as a devoted Christian and an Igbo person. Things Fall Apart is a story about Okonkwo and his internal conflict regarding his own identity, similar to Achebe himself. Things Fall Apart serves as a message to the readers that Africans, specifically Nigerians, are not savages, nor are they perfect people. Through Things Fall Apart, Achebe is influenced by his own personal history as a Nigerian, which shows us how he took the stolen story of African people and gave it back to them in order for them to tell their story themselves; this way the complexity of African people are brought to light.
